SELF WORTH… THE IMPACT IT HAS ON YOUR TRUE GLOW

Ever been in a funk? Me too. These are a few things that helped.

In the forward to Nancy Levin’s book Worthy, Doreen Virtue had some very powerful things to say about the importance of self worth and how it affects the way we care for ourselves.

“…unless you value yourself, you won’t have the motivation to exercise, get enough sleep, eat healthfully, and care for yourself.” “Unless we learn to value ourselves, we won’t ask for what we need, and we won’t accept help when it’s offered.”

Wow. Did that hit home for you? I know it sure did for me.

There have been times in my life where my self worth has really needed improvement. Sometimes I could connect the lull in how I felt deep inside to an event, but most of the time I really didn’t know where it was coming from. It didn’t even dawn on me that my self worth was in question, I just knew I didn’t feel like my best self.

I would look outward instead of inward to find the answers. It rarely worked.

Often I assumed I was just pressing forward, skipping workouts, forgoing sleep, and skimping on meals in order to reach a deadline or push through a tough week. Then weeks turned into months, and even years. Yet I was still not giving myself the proper self care that I preached was so important to each and every single one of my clients.

For almost 15 years now, I've worked with women all day every day that I’m in my office. Many of these women have a lot on their plate. They’re high powered boss babes who travel the globe, many are busy moms, some are both. Many are in the public eye & feel a lot of pressure to be “on”, to see and be seen, and to do All. The. Things.

They come to me not only for fabulous brows & to perk up their lack luster skin, but often we discover that their inner light, what truly makes them shine bright in this world, has been dimmed by feeling bogged down, stressed to the max, and on the verge of burn out.

After some deep chats, I’ve learned that many of the women tend to equate their self worth with things outside of themselves. Here’s a list of things they (and you) are more than, in case you’ve forgotten just how great you are.

YOU ARE MORE THAN:

  • your job
  • your social circle
  • how clear your skin is
  • your bank account
  • the quantity of your social media followers
  • your weight
  • how many times in your life you’ve heard the words “I love you”
  • how young people think you look
  • how well your child does in school
  • how many people want to date you
  • your struggles & your wins
  • what anyone thinks of you (Except for you. That matters!)

I stress, to my clients, the importance of taking a moment to pause, to reflect on how they view themselves and their life, how they’re really feeling, and why they’re doing what they’re doing. To sleep, eat, make time to relax. That beauty is more than just skin deep and that healthy skin starts within.

How we see ourselves & the importance we put on caring for ourself as if we were a valued, loved, and cherished being (because we are) is rooted so deeply in our self worth. When we feel worthy of all the goodness in the world, not because of how talented we are, how hard we work, or how many likes we get on social media, we begin to really get in touch with who we are at our core. We find what matters. We do what matters. We shine bright. All because we know that our actions are in alignment with who we really want to be and how we really want to feel.

After reading just the first few paragraphs of the book I mentioned at the start, I was so inspired to reflect upon my life as deeply as I tell you all to reflect upon yours.

I made a commitment to myself to not let regular self care slide. Although, since when has getting all our meals in and sleeping more than 4 hours a night been considered self care? It’s necessity! Lesson learned.

I made a commitment to reconnect to how I want to feel & how I want to present myself in this world. To stop hiding and to let my light shine (once I got my light back.) To rediscover my self worth so I can be of better service not only to you, but to me too.

I invite you to periodically take a look at how you feel about YOU. Not what you do, or what you have, or who is in your life. Just you and how great you are, not because of anything other that the fact that you are here and you are you. And remind yourself often of the words of Mr. Darcy to Bridget Jones in one of my favorite movie quotes, “I like you. Very much. Just as you are.” Now say that back to yourself and repeat as often as needed.

Keeping this in mind can’t help but stimulate a bit more confidence as you walk through this world and bring you back to the true you. Nurturing your self worth will definitely let your true beauty (the real stuff, on the inside) radiate and surely glow.

While we’re all a work in progress and we must continue to find ways to be our best selves, we often get there sooner and with more grace when we show ourselves the kindness, gentleness, and love that we all deserve so much.

Another book that’s definitely worth a read, especially if you’re having a hard time figuring out exactly how you want to feel is The Desire Map by Danielle LaPorte. It created so much clarity for me in not only the kind of life I want to have but how I want to feel each and every single day of it.

What brings you back to center when your self worth has tanked a bit? I’d love to hear about it. Send me a message and tell me what's worked.

In the meantime, be well & remember...

You matter and you are loved!
